A3611-2-K: Writer/Producer Seeks Assistance in Terminating Verbal Agreement with Joint Writer

Client has been writing for children for about 5 years and teaches voice and piano. She wrote and copyrighted an unpublished work in 2023. In 2025, she started work with another individual (AP) to create a musical stage adaptation based on her registered work. Writer conveyed the story to AP verbally who then wrote the script, lyrics and stage adaptation. The parties agreed verbally to share the back-end 60/40. There is no written contract. Client understood that she would retain her rights to the underlying work and in the newly created work. Writer is now concerned as AP is claiming rights in aspects of her prior work. The relationship has now become fractious and Writer would like advice on and assistance in terminating the relationship and having the ability to move forward with another writing partner.
