Pro Bono Services
Through its extensive network of volunteer attorneys, GLA provides free legal assistance to artists who would not otherwise be able to afford legal representation on a wide variety of arts-related issues. Artists whose gross income is less than $30,000 per year qualify for pro bono services. Nonprofit arts organizations with budgets under $650,000 are also eligible for pro bono assistance. Pro bono clients are required to become a GLA member. If you think you may qualify for free legal representation, call (404) 873-3911 to schedule an appointment with our office.
GLA offers paid lawyer referrals for artists and arts organizations that do not qualify for pro bono assistance. In exchange for a $50 referral fee (or the cost of a $50 membership), GLA connects artists with lawyers who will provide low-cost legal representation. Our lawyer referral service operates statewide and refers artists and arts organizations to attorneys for consultation on a wide-variety of arts-related issues, including copyright, contract review, labor / employment, immigration, general corporate matters, nonprofit formation, tax and First Amendment issues, among others. If you are interested in having a case referred to a GLA attorney, call (404) 873-3911.
Our library of reference materials can answer many questions artists and arts organizations have without needing to speak to an attorney. GLA’s extensive library boasts over 250 titles on various legal and business-related arts issues, as well as sample contracts, copyright forms, and other resources. Although we are unable to lend out our texts, anyone may make an appointment to come to the office and read over the materials in our resource library during our business hours. To make an appointment, please call (404) 873-3911.
Seminars and Workshops
In an effort to educate artists about their legal rights and responsibilities, GLA hosts numerous seminars and workshops on important legal and business-related issues that artists often face. Seminar topics in the past have included: contracts, types of corporate structures, employment law, taxes, copyrights, and trademarks. For organizations thinking about incorporating as a nonprofit, GLA conducts workshops on 501(c)(3) nonprofit incorporation on the first Tuesday of every month. To learn more about these and other upcoming events, please check out our Upcoming Events page. Call (404) 873-3911 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to register.
