About Artists Making a Difference
GLA’s formula for providing free legal services to artists and arts organizations has been highly successful for more than four decades, and we are now expanding our programming by partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Atlanta to implement the “Artists Making a Difference Project.” Under this unique partnership, 10 of GLA’s artists who have received pro bono legal services will “give back” at least 400 collective hours in mentoring and educating children and youth, all of whom reside in underserved communities in Fulton County. Each artist has committed to providing 40 hours of mentoring in the artist’s specific discipline to the students at the Boys & Girls Clubs.
At the end of the project, GLA will host “Art Extravanganza” at Boys & Girls Clubs’ gallery and workspace for young artists called the Youth Art Connection, located in downtown Atlanta. During the Art Extravaganza, the children will display the art they created during the previous six months. The childrens’ families as well as the mentor-artists will be invited to attend this Extravaganza. Activities at the Extravaganza will include the opportunity for families to create their own art along with their children.
The Difference Artists Can Make
The Artists Making a Difference Project provides a rare opportunity for low-income youth to experience a diverse variety of creative disciplines, including music, photography, visual arts, and graphic design. Educators have long recognized that engaging with the arts has far reaching beneficial consequences for youth. Studies such as this report by the National Endowment for the Arts show that at-risk youth who have access to the arts do better academically, have higher career goals, and are more civically engaged than those who don’t receive the benefit of an arts education.
